في مملكةٍ يُعد السحر فيها أساس الحياة، وُلد صبيٌ يدعى ماش برينيد بلا قدرات سحرية. وفي هذا المجتمع، تحدد مكانة الفرد الاجتماعية بناءً على قدراته السحرية، وأولئك الذين لا يمتلكون أي قوى سحرية يُعاقبون بالإعدام. هرب ماش من الإعدام عن طريق الاختباء في غابةٍ كثيفة، لكنه لم يستطع الهرب من مصيره إلى الأبد. ففي أحد الأيام، تم اكتشاف سره، ووُضع أمام خيارين: إما أن يُعدم، وإما أن ينضم إلى إيستون، الأكاديمية المرموقة للسحر، ويحصل على لقب “المختار الإلهي”.
